1265_ 8/23/12 - Can you believe, in ten years we will have robots capable of helping us in our homes. This is amazing and Dr. Louise F. Gunderson, President and CEO of Gamma Two Robotics is here to tell us about the current state of robotics. Louise started out by giving us an overview of Gamma Two, a small robotics company formed by 'two escaped academics' Louise and James Gunderson. “We are building a security robot that will be launched next month that will do a security patrol without a human operating it. Given an area to patrol and directions from you, and carrying a camera, the robot goes around obstacles by itself. If there is a blocked route, it will tell you its route is blocked and it will go on and continue its business. The interesting and hard part was building something that was as smart as a living system. There are lots of robots out there that are teleoperated - like the remote controlled car, which has been extended to a very cool robot that are being used for bomb disposal by the military. There are lots of cool reactive systems like the Rumba, but you can't really tell it where to go. It just goes where it's gonna go. Gamma Two Robotics has combined the reactive system with a higher level brain based on an animal model so that it knows where it is and it goes where you tell it to go.” Louise also talked about military robots. Larry asked, "Is there a time when we'll actually have robots helping us out around the house?" Louise replied, "Within the next decade we will have that. Everything that we needed to build a security robot is also needed to make a robot that is safe around humans and trustworthy in the house. There are a lot of additional functionalities that have to be built in." Louise feels it is very realistic in the next ten years and she really hopes it's one with her label on it. ...Listen for more...
