At the 7th Annual Rocky Mountain Corporate Growth Conference Larry sat down with Terrell (Terry) Jones, founder of Travilocity.com to discuss success in turbulent times. Terry understands dealing with unprecedented change and what has to be done to be successful. During the interview he focused on three things, 1) dealing with change and the speed of change; 2) how important innovation is, particularly in large companies. Travelocity began within American Airlines, which is a little rare, ideas don't always flourish in big companies. 3) and then he talked about building digital relationships with your customers. It's not that face-to-face is going away, but if we don't understand that digital connection with the customer, we're not going to have that customer anymore. Terry said, "Travelocity went through unprecedented change in a very short period of time. The Internet is sort of like Darwinism on steroids - everything happens so quickly. We went from 10% commission on our tickets over three years to zero from the airlines - our entire revenue stream was cut out, we had to revolutionize the company." Listen for more sage advice.

Guy Kawasaki Talks About Innovation, Change and Entrepreneurs

Larry cornered Guy Kawasaki at the 2008 BioWest conference after his keynote address. Guy, author of the best selling book, The Art of the Start and Reality Check is also cofounder Alltop.com as well as Garage.com. Larry asked, "We are going through some tougher times, how do you see this playing out?" Guy, a champion for entrepreneurs replied, "Well, I’m not a visionary or an oracle, I’ll tell you what I would tell an entrepreneur, which is, ‘plug your ears and keep going!’ Of all the tech startups one out of 5000 go public so what difference does it make what the DOW Jones Industrial Average, especially tomorrows DJIA, maybe 5 years from now it’ll matter, but not tomorrow. If you just try to build a great business, hopefully that great business will make a ton of money. If you make a ton of money, maybe you’ll go public – still unlikely, but you might; and you might get acquired, also unlikely but we go from one out of 5000 to one out 500, something like that, so that helps. But even if none of those sort of dream things happen, you have a good business! If you only start businesses in good time, you may have to wait a few years – I really don’t see why it truly matters. You either believe or you don’t believe. If you’re an entrepreneur who says, ‘well, I’m not going to start a company because the stock market is too low and unemployment is too high’, I’ve got to tell you I would put those two items right at the bottom. You have to develop a good product, you have to make it, you have to sell it, collect the money and service your customers, pretty much the fundamentals. Listen for more insights...

Larry corralled Brian Schwartz, author 50 Interviews (Entrepreneurs), and got into the history and outcomes of his new book. Larry asked, "How did you get into this 50 Interview theme?" Brian credited his wife, Debi and went onto say, "Well, my wife challenged me to interview 50 entrepreneurs before she'd give me her blessing to quit my job, which I was ready to do. This was back in February of '08, I set out to do the interviews and about 5 interviews in, people kept telling me, "Hey Brian, these are some great questions, have you ever considered writing a book?" I figured there might be something to this, so I got myself structured, disciplined and started putting them together for a book which I actually finished in December. Larry wondered, "What were the 3 most surprising things you heard during these interviews?" Brian replied, "The three distinguishing characteristics of an entrepreneur - and I hadn't been familiar with these before writing the book: 1.) a consuming passion. If I offered you $1 Million today to give this up, you'd tell me to take a hike. It's like an addiction, you can't let it go and that's how you know it is a consuming passion; 2.) Find a purpose greater than yourself, it's not about the money 3) Was how entrepreneurs view risk. They see risk as dashing into the future with hope. To them it's an empowering word, it's not a paralyzing word, they see it as a possibility to make things better."  Jack Uldrich's understanding of nanotechnology has brought him into emerging technologies and in a sense what he is a "Business Technology Forecaster". Jack says, "I don't predict the future but explain a range of possibilities and highlight the broad trends that are pulsating through society and definitely going to impact business." Larry Nelson, w3w3® interviewed the ACG Denver Corporate Growth Conference Keynote Speaker earlier this month. He asked Jack about the economy and how he saw the technological forces changing or impacting the future. The long term economy... Jack is really optimistic, he believes we are entering the 'exponential economy'. He goes on to talk about the nine technological forces growing exponentially (doubling every 6 to 24 months), "These forces are going to break thru, they're going to transform business and they're going to create new business. No doubt we are in a crisis right now and it is easy to focus on the danger, but if we focus on these forces you will see the opportunity and that's what good executives need to do". In the Near Term material sciences... nanotechnology is creating immense opportunities in the manufacturing sector; Mid Term, Jack is really bullish on the energy sector, solar, wind, cellulosic ethanol. and the big trend is in healthcare. "The future is going to be diagnosing disease and preventing them before they take root. There are lots of exciting things coming down the pike". Uldrich, a former naval intelligence officer and Defence Department official, he also served as the Director of the Minnesota Office of Strategic and Long Range Planning. Jack's comments in Larry's book, Mastering Change in the Midst of Chaos are very eye-opening.

 Dr. Paul Bauer, Clinical Professor, Daniels College of Business, DU and Chris Pelley, Managing Director, Capital Investment Management Group discuss this social entrepreneurship with Larry. Paul explained, "For me, it goes back to the Entrepreneur part of the equation. Like Einstein said, “We can’t solve the problems with the same thinking that we created them with.” Entrepreneurship is a mechanism that will allow us to address and make some real progress with the challenges we face today. The ‘social’ part for me says what we’re trying to do is create value wealth for the community, not just for the individual. I think business does that and I think business has a definite role to play in that. That’s why I think this is a topic that is very relevant to business today." Chris went on from there, "I come from the business entrepreneurship side of the equation, and yet we see a common path, a parallel direction, in terms of solving many of the world’s problems, whether it’s through business enterprise or social enterprise. My interpretation of their definition of social entrepreneurs is, 1.) It’s people who are going to use creative thinking in solving any problem. 2.) The notion of using real business principals and business drivers for the best results is also an important issue. 3.) Sustainability." The special guest speaker from New York, Chris Lowney, was a partner at JPMorgan for 18 years and is the author of Heroic Leadership. Dr. Paul Bauer, Clinical Professor, Daniels College of Business, DU and Chris Pelley, Managing Director, Capital Investment Management Group discuss this special social entrepreneurship day with Larry. Author Chris Lowney offers leadership lessons from a 450-year-old company that grappled successfully with the same challenges that test great companies today: forging seamless multinational teams, motivating inspired performance, remaining “change ready” and strategically adaptable. They were asked, "How can Colorado carve its place as a world leader in this new realm? We can accomplish this mission by building an alliance of business, political, and academic leaders in Colorado. Our top schools already recognize the strength of social entrepreneurship and its potential to make a global impact." There will be a number of other high-profile guests including First Lady Jeannie Ritter, Lisa Nitze, Vice President, Ashoka: Innovators for the Public. After the Phipps Mansion it is then followed an ACG lunch program at the DAC...Then a special event at DU in the afternoon. The evening will be at Regis University. So this is the early stage of a real coalition in Colorado as I’ve labeled it ABCs, Academics, Business and Community.

Larry sat down with Steve Baker who was sued for $1.4 Billion and is the author of 'Pushing Water Uphill with a Rake, Memoirs of a Successful Failure'. Steve reflected back and said, "What I learned, going through this is, you can go out in life and particularly in business, do everything right and still fail. I did, we did everything right, as I tell the story in the book, and along came this suit for $1.4 billion dollars, and the stock market crash. Everything I did right didn't matter, everything went wrong. I lost everything, I lost my home, I filed for bankruptcy, and through that experience, I learned many valuable lessons and that's why I'm still here today. The biggest thing I learned going through that experience is the road to success is paved in failure, and you will fail to one degree or another, it's just part of being a business person. So know that going in, accept that and learn from it. As you and I have talked about this, the person who goes through this stands back and learns from it, that person will achieve success. The next thing that I learned and was able to do, is do your best and maintain your ethics, at all costs, as you're going through failure. Because what happens, and these are the turbulent times that try men's souls, and you must maintain that, because if you cross the line of ethics, very often, you're not coming back. I quote Thomas Hopkins, especially when speaking with kids, 'We are not judged by the number of times we fail, but by the number of times we succeed. And the number of times we succeed is in direct proportion to the number of times we fail and try again!'" Listen...
