Margaret Heffernan is an entrepreneur, Chief Executive and author. She was born in Texas, raised in Holland and educated at Cambridge University. She worked in BBC Radio for five years where she wrote, directed, produced and commissioned dozens of documentaries and dramas. In Magaret's first book, The Naked Truth: A Working Woman’s Manifesto on Business and What Really Matters, she brings up almost every important issue for women trying to climb the traditional corporate ladder. In some cases she offers solutions, either from her own experience and research, or through the shared stories of women she interviewed for the book. Melodie Reagan (in Denver) talked to Margaret (in England) about the changing tide in entrepreneurship and her new book, How She Does It: Redefining power and the nature of success for the 21st Century. The information is timely, useful and very eye-opening. Between 1997 and 2007, privately held businesses owned by women grew at three times the rate of all American privately held firms. Listen to the interview and then attend a program hosted by TiE Women's Forum where you can have a chance to interact with Margaret directly. Larry and Pat will be there.

Looks like I have a new book to pick up! It sounds like Margaret has a lot to say, and plenty of advice to help fellow woman entrepreneurs on the path to success. It’s a new ballgame for females in independent business, with a vast majority of women going into entrepreneurship and all the wonderful opportunities technology has to offer. Of course one of the best ways to expand an independent business is by taking it to the internet. Well, I have been using Microsoft’s new Office Live Small Business for the past few weeks and I must say it’s a wonderful tool to get any entrepreneur off the ground and on the web. It has a fantastic e-mail beta for newsletters, storing invoices, and an easy-to-use webpage designer, no HTML experience necessary! You even get your own “.com” URL included, all for free!

In the world of female entrepreneurship, there are plenty of obstacles and challenges to overcome, but there are also plenty of opportunities, one of the greatest being the vast potential market of the internet. I highly recommend OLSB to any entrepreneur looking to bring their business online. I work with Microsoft, so if you or any of your readers have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks, and good luck to all the aspiring entrepreneurs out there!
Best,
Kimberly
