Emergence of natural rubber business in U.S.

Really exciting and a life saving development
1583_ 7/14/14 - We begin with an overview of Yulex Corp, speaking with the founder and CEO, Jeff Martin. This is really exciting and a life saving development for people suffering from a latex allergy. A lot of people don't know the U.S. has been 100% dependent on imports of natural rubber. Ninety percent of all the natural rubber in the world comes from southeast Asia, and there are sever allergy problems with the tropical latex that comes from southeast Asia. It's been a problem for a very long time. Yulex Corp has developed a new source of botanical rubber. Jeff said, "What we've done is taken a wild crop, namely Yule ('y-u-lee'), which is indigenous to Mexico, and brought it into Arizona. We've domesticated the crop and developed a process to extract natural rubber from this wild plant. We built a factory in Phoenix where we extract and refine the rubber and sell it into the medical and consumer product industries. Basically it's the emergence of a natural rubber business for the United States." Jeff also told us that they are providing this natural rubber latex for the medical industry where Latex allergy is a severe problem. It just so happens that the domestic latex that we grow here in the United States is non-allergenic. So we're gearing up for medical gloves, surgical gloves, condoms, catheters- for people who have a latex allergy. The best advice Jeff ever received was from another EY Entrepreneur of the Year (Florida, 20 years ago) who happened to be Jeff's boss. He said, "It's easier to knock things down than to knock things in. Don't be SNIOP - and to be SNIOPed is to be Susceptible to the Negative Influences of Other People.
