We're a fairly large organization at this point, $700M in revenue, 37 offices across the U.S. and Canada and we're looking to grow this company to $2-3 Billion in the next three to five years. Advice for entrepreneurs: Dan always tells his leaders, "If your best interest is aligned with the success of the people around you, you're automatically going to be successful. So I focus on the success of the people around me and don't worry so much about my own personal success." Robert moved to Scottsdale from Chicago about ten years ago and he loves it. But, there was no room for him in the hedge fund space where he came from, so he decided to start this company. "And it's been very interesting, very challenging, but ultimately very successful." Rob saw a need for tracking vehicles commercial and other vehicles, to make them more efficient. So what they do is track about 65,000 trucks across the country. They are growing like crazy; very organic with no outside investment helping their customers to be more efficient, to keep track of their assets and their people to make sure that they are accountable, to make sure that they are safe and to make sure they drive return of investment for the business or governmental unit in question...Listen for more…

"For our initial pilot we looked for projects across a range of academic and research disciplines, as well as for projects that provide outreach." Larry interviewed Ray Johnson, CU-Boulder Crowd funding Pilot Project Lead from the Leeds School of Business, Deming Center for Entrepreneurship. CU-Boulder Crowd funding is a pilot online fundraising platform (launching May 2014) that allows CU-Boulder individuals and organizations to create and share fundraising campaigns with an engaged community. Our tools empower the CU-Boulder community to come together and create lasting impact on things you care about. Through the platform, you can: Explore eight exciting pilot projects led by CU-Boulder students and faculty, from engineering to archival work to film; Spread the word about projects that inspire you to help generate interest and enable project teams to reach their goals; Make tax-deductible contributions using a convenient online interface; Keep up with project developments and outcomes as the projects move toward completion. Annual Veterans' Appreciation Breakfast and Civilian Success Fair
1543_ 5/8/14 - Last week, Larry was a speaker at the Denver Southeast Rotary Club. Afterwards, we met and spoke with Bill Palmer who is chairing the Denver Southeast Rotary's 8th Annual Veterans' Appreciation Breakfast and Civilian Success Fair ... May 24th, 2014 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum. This is not a job fair - we're really trying to help the veterans with the processes necessary for their success! Bill, US Navy retired, Commanding Officer, USS Denver, and Fast Frigate Trainer, Buckley, CO. and Vietnam Veteran. Bill wanted to do more for our Military veterans as he worked on this program . 'A great breakfast, a patriotic program, thank you for your service' is all great, but Bill wanted more - These men and women have given so much to our country and Bill wanted to do something that would really help these veterans. "You know they can't just go to the VA Hospital and get help - there's a process you must go through." Getting help can be complicated, getting to know their families again, assimilating back into civilian life is not an easy task. These men and women have been through an incredible journey and that journey has changed them. So in addition to that wonderful, plated breakfast and excellent patriotic program [Senator Hank Brown, Senator Mark Udall and keynote speaker Major General Jay Lindell] they've come up with the add-on "Civilian Success Fair". The Mission: To show America's Veterans appreciation for what they have done, have been willing to do for our country and to assist them with tools for success following their service. The Goal: For you to leave better prepared, to enhance your life through personal growth.

Many business people are surprised to hear that there is a growing number (contrary to popular belief) of women getting into and making a very productive and rewarding career in Information Technology (IT). Intense infatuation with natural building methodologies
1536_ 4/20/14 - We are visiting with Cody Farmer of MainStream Corporation a performance-driven green building firm. We've known and followed Cody and his partner Lisa Farmer for several years now and are very impressed with what they're doing. Imagine if you will, living off the grid... It all started with an intense infatuation with natural building methodologies and real estate investing. They thought that a person could build sustainably with nature and experience freedom off any grid, superior indoor environmental quality (IEQ), and extreme comfort. "We then learned the science and methodology of Passivhaus, which challenged every building principle we thought we knew. Our sights are now set on helping others accomplish their visions where architecture meets science to produce extreme performance, comfort, and health." They invested a lot of money into education and traveling and touring houses and buildings that were performing and they became certified Passive House Consultants and Designers. MainStream then put up a proof-of-concept building in Broomfield, one of three known private buildings in the United States. Four years ago Cody and Lisa added another dimension to MainStream and began doing 'Performance Building Design', material specification and energy models. Building from the ground up, or maybe a city building that's not performing, or a home that needs to be remodeled, even a brand new building - the first thing MainStream does is 'engineer out the losses of the system'. UC Denver Business School certifies sustainability

A real boost to sustainability in Colorado and beyond
1532_ 4/16/14 - We asked Cliff Young, Associate Dean in the Dean's Office at UC Denver Business School about managing for sustainability. "The history of managing for sustainability was actually somewhat industry driven." The first of these classes started back in 2007-08 and has grown to where UC Denver currently has 12 different classes teaching sustainability and three specializations, internally here at the business school. They're all graduate specializations, so if a student takes any four of these classes, that student gets a specialization either in their MBA or a Masters of Science & Management. Or if the student took three classes associated with the Masters of Science & Marketing you would get a specialization and with that you can get a Certificate in Sustainability. Cliff said, "The most recent accomplishment at UC Denver is bringing Graham Russell on board as the Ambassador for Managing for Sustainability." Larry has known Graham Russell for a number of years, "and he has done some phenomenal work in this area - it's really neat to see you with this great organization, but how did you get involved and what's your role?" Graham tells us when he was running CORE (the sustainable business association - Denver), he was privileged to get to know the UC Denver faculty. Graham left CORE in 2010 and was invited to teach here at UC Denver and has taught two or three courses over the past few years. He's also been instrumental in building relationships between the business school and the local business community. Graham also chairs the Advisory Council on Sustainability, and they've been very successful in building relationships with many of the larger companies in this part of the world.

Private industry to the rescue

Electronics recycling has been largely unregulated
1508_ 3/5/14 - Larry is interviewing Creighton Bildstein, President of Urban Mining2, North American Technology Exchange’s Material Acquisition, Sales and Marketing subsidiary. Prior to this undertaking, he was a co-founder, co-owner and principal in an asset management and disposition company located in Denver, Colorado for 11 years in which he personally secured numerous contracts with Fortune 500 companies. As you probably are aware, there is a Colorado law, passed last year whereby residences and businesses are not allowed to throw electronics in the trash, it has to be brought into recycling. Back in the late 90s, Unicor a federally owned entity provided prison labor for electronic recycling to private industry - manufacturing and services. Basically prisoners taking apart cameras etc., which contained lead, arsenic cadmium, mercury, silicon... this is really bad stuff. Breaking these electronic devices with hammers created lots of toxic dust. About five years into the project, prisoners, guards and their families started coming down with heavy metals related illnesses, resulting in lawsuits against Unicor. Now they are looking to private industry, the manufacturers of electronics, who really don't tell you what's in their products. Most of Creighton's efforts have involved working with C-level executives within the telecom, data center and cable TV industries finding ways to help them maximize the value of their end-of-life electronic assets. His success comes from creating strategies and solutions to complex problems...Listen for more ideas...
