Larry Nelson and Steve Wille - Colorado Authors Transform your Management Team Beyond Expectations 1041_ 7/8/11 - We are in a whirlwind of change. We are here with Steve Wille. Steve is well known here in the business and technical community. He's also the author of Colorful Leadership. People are always asking about change and motivation, and Steve has an interesting approach to the subject. Rather a colorful approach, imagine putting on a pair of 'rose colored' glasses. You think optimistic, you like everybody - everybody likes you. Steve uses that as a symbol for good relationship, the People Filter in your glasses. That isn't the only picture, Steve believes sometimes you have to take off the rose colored glasses and replace them with blue glasses. Take a cold hard look at things. Look at the numbers, look at reality. Are things working? A little more skeptical picture. Still there's more, another pair of green glasses that spot the strangeness around us. The chaos, the innovation, new, exciting things. A business, an organization dies if it doesn't do something new and exciting - there is no future. "So", says Steve, "the optimal leader changes the glasses and looks at the same situation through the three different filters and makes the best decision in the situation. Of course they're discussing the 3-Filters Technology™ developed by Larry Nelson and taught by Larry globally for many years. Steve has been studying the 3-Filters Technology™ and brings a new perspective, and a colorful understanding to working with the 3-Filters Technology™. On July 15th Steve and Larry will be presenting this bright new picture of the 3-Filters Technology™ for managers and their teams. Be sure to check out the information on the seminar titled, "Transform your Management Team Beyond Expectations". Bart Taylor: Invest Time and Money into Developing Content 1039 7/7/11 - "Media is not simply the domain of publishers, it's the domain of corporations." Larry interviewed Bart Taylor, Vice President and Publisher of the ColoradoBIZ Magazine. Bart went on, "Let me give you a challenge that companies have right now. Five years ago, as a business, you were probably looking at eNewsletters as an opportunity. Today you are no longer differentiated by the fact that you're publishing a newsletter. Content is the new differentiator. He recommends companies and organizations to invest time and money into developing content to support their business. An interesting recommendation that may need a little discussion for a good understanding. Obviously ColoradoBIZ and w3w3® are in the 'content business'. Bart points out that Larry has written a book about managing change, "I think that is the name of our game as publishers, managing change in a rapidly changing, transformational media market. Media companies/publishers have faced two strong headwinds over the past few years. One, the economy has been lousy - but economies come back. I think the more transcendent, the more fundamental issue that publishers are dealing with today is technology, what technology is doing to change the nature of the media business. But to companies, technology is also providing an opportunity and I think as publishers we need to be very cognizant of the change that technology is having on corporations. I think it would be a mistake for media to think that they are the center of the content universe as they once were. So if you recognize that as a media property, and recognize that businesses have an opportunity now to become publishers and manage content - that's where I am coming from." Years ago w3w3.com and ColoradoBIZ worked together on some things, ColoradoBIZ providing the hard copy and w3w3 the digital, online copy. The future landscape for hard copy publishers was beginning to look rather grim. But ColoradoBIZ changed, moved, adapted to the new market and really did a great job. Bart and Larry go onto discuss the 'New Media' and the 'Digital Media horizon.'...Listen for more... Leaders have unprecedented demands placed on them 994 4/6/11 - Are you an ordinary or an extraordinary leader? This is going to be a very interesting topic, we're back with Robert White. "In prior interviews we talked about a personal foundation for success, as well as specific attitudes, habits, behaviors, that are really required to lead an extraordinary life. Now it occurred to me, based on what you've said, that we all have to be leaders today, is that true?" Larry is interviewing Robert White, founder of Extraordinary People, author and worldwide speaker. Robert's reply, "I believe so, I think when times were more stable and change was not coming at us at the pace that it is currently coming at us, that we could just manage our lives. You know managers, good managers, can plan, organize and control, whether that be in a family or corporate setting or non-profit setting. But when there is a tremendous amount of change, what is required is to move people. Move yourself and move others, to be able to deal with the change. To innovate, to create and to adapt to the rapidly changing environment that we're all living in. The environment is changing for our families. I mean, the pressures that the average teenager in middle school faces are radically different from when you and I were growing up. We all kind of know that. Of course it's true in organizations, our competitors change fast so we've got to change fast. Markets change, prices change, and everything changes. We have to do more with less, that's pretty constant for the last 10-15 years. And certainly in our civic organizations, politically and other government organizations, there's an awesome amount of change. So what do you need when there's a lot of change? You need someone to lead people through it." "That's a fact, Mastering Change in the Midst of Chaos, one of my favorite topics, said Larry. "And a very good book." Robert pointed out. "Leadership is not so much a science as it is art. And the art really functions around relationships. When you're going to be asking people to handle change, which is one of the primary tasks of a leader, the level of relationship is going to determine how effective you're going to be. So my focus is on preparing people to be in better, stronger, deeper, more productive relationships. From my perspective, that's a key aspect of being a great leader, to create extraordinary relationships. Get a complimentary copy of Robert's eBook, The Tipping Point of Success from the link below.. Leadership in the new economy 967_ 2/18/11 - "The very strategies that enabled you to stay alive over the last recession, are not the strategies that are going to enable you to grow in the future." said Dr. Jana Matthews. Larry sat down with Jana, founder and CEO of The Jana Matthews Group, who is an international expert on entrepreneurial leadership and business growth. Based in Boulder, Colorado. Jana Matthews believes the economy is turning around. Jana shares some thoughts she thinks CEO's should be thinking about. There's more to be heard in her interview but here are some highlights. No. 1 "It is the leader who determines the culture. Is your's a culture of optimism? To be positive, upbeat, expecting success, or pessimistic and down trodden, that's up to the leader to determine. Optimism suggests a confidence, an ability to think outside the box. Jana said, "We used to say at the Kauffman Center, it's keeping your knees bent so you could go in a lot of different directions, and the willingness to be flexible with a fallback position, and figure out how to make it work." Jana goes on to say, "Optimism is important but, in your heart, in your office, when you look at your financials and your customers, you're realistic. But you project the optimism that it's going to get better as opposed to the pessimism of 'oh my god, we're in free fall'." No. 2 Look at your people. You need to signal to your good people, the ones you want to keep, the ones that you think will help build your company, you need to signal to them that they're really important to your future. Because when this job market opens up, people are going to jump... No. 3 "Look at your executive team. The team that helps you baton down the hatches and get you through, may not be the team that you need to lead you into the next stage of growth, and to the next level. A very successful past client said, "The bean counters were really important during the recession, but we need to have more of those dreamers again." That's one of the most difficult decisions for a leader to make. But it is part of leadership. It is looking at what the company needs for the future."... No. 4 "I would take a look at my customers because we have held onto customers just so we could have revenue. But you and I know Larry: we get about 80% of our revenue from 20% of our customers." In some cases the others actually cost you as they require over servicing, they don't pay on time, they complain, they send products back, custom revisions, etc. So you need to look hard and say..." Starting a business or expanding a business 904_ 10/5/10- David Moll first appeared on the w3w3.com radar a number of years ago. He'd just been appointed president of a small local software company. David took this company from their early Boulder offices (he describes as an original garage startup) with about a dozen people to one of the most successful, a huge, profitable security software company, everyone knows as Webroot. Today David is founder of the VC firm, Infield Capital. With his industrial, high-tech and venture capital background Larry decided to ask him two important questions in these tight economic times. "First, is this a good time to start a business?" David's answer might surprise, so listen carefully. Here we give you a few teasers... David said, "Nope! This is a terrible time to start a business. But, with that said, I think a lot of people don't necessarily have a choice. We know what the job climate is... a lot of people find themselves outside of the workforce and not voluntarily so. With your resume emailed to as many places as you can think of, what the heck do you do then? For somebody who finds themselves in that position it may be more necessity than choice to start a business, and just because it's a bad time doesn't mean it's the wrong time." David continues with challenges facing companies, consumers and job seekers. "Our second question, What about expansion, is it a good time for expansion?" David said, "It's a great time! Where companies need to be careful is that you want to be thoughtful about the risk you take on. Grow from your strength, not from speculation to make sure you're making good decisions. So this is not the time to bet the farm. But I do like this. You, Larry, gave me the really generous introduction and we talked about Webroot. Well, it was a really interesting phenomenon, I joined Webroot in 2002. You know 9/11 and the crash of the Internet bubble and all those things that kind of roiled about in 2001 were still very fresh upon us and venture capital spending didn't really return until about 2003ish... So the little company that I joined, Webroot, we were undergoing an expansion in 2002 and 2003... We thoughtfully increased our expense rate, thoughtfully endeavored into new product development, added staff in our sales, marketing and online channel growth - none of it foolish... But we positioned ourselves for growth when few companies were growing and as a result, when the good times came..." There's much more... Trends and concerns of the print industry 894_ 9/20/10- "We're here with Chris Wood, Publisher of the Boulder County Business Report. Over the years, we've worked together often, but your industry hardcopy newspaper, is going thru heck today, could we explore some of these things?", Larry asked. Chris replied, "Well it certainly is going thru some difficult times, transformational times for the newspaper industry overall. We've seen a lot of papers shut down, others that have gone all online or mostly online, we've seen bankruptcies - our parent company filed bankruptcy earlier this year, so it is the trend. It's a very difficult thing for people to endure. We love the newspaper industry. But I think it's one where you have to look where the opportunities are. Print is not what it was, I don't think it's going away anytime soon, it has a very important role to fill. There are increasing opportunities presented by mobile applications. Mobile apps, mobile devices are becoming one of the fastest growing methods for disseminating information, including news. The question that I think every newspaper publisher has right now is, how do you make money? How do you make money online because the online advertising stream is not what the print advertising stream is. It is a dilemma but I'm hopeful that we and others will figure it out over time." Chris added, "We really believe in touching our readers and customers in three different ways. One is print, not only our newspaper, but we publish a variety of print products, annuals, directories and magazines, medical directories, technology directories, etc. And the second way is online with our website, and thru the newsletters that we send out. The third way is in person and that is through the events..." There's much more to listen to...
